MICAH

I wander out of the shower, drying my hair while thinking of the last two days at Beliani’s with Milly and feeling a pang of disappointment when I realize I only have two more left.

Nothing happened after last night, though it’s clear both Milly and I want something to happen. The tension is always simmering under the surface, alongside my dwindling reservations and Milly’s unspoken truths.

Today she went off to shoot bottles with Tony and Alex, and I opted for a more relaxing day with my book and in the kitchen with Daisy, picking up a few new recipes to take home with me.

My phone blinks with a little red light. I throw my hair-drying towel aside and pick it up, finding two missed calls—one from Nona and one from Elijah.

Checking my watch, I see it’s six pm in Wyoming, which means eight pm back home. Nona would be at card night with the mom squad. She probably called me during an intermission and can’t talk now, so I text her to call me in the morning.

Elijah answers my call after a couple of rings, his rough voice sounding more irritated than usual when he greets me with a grunt.

“Whoa, what crawled up your ass?” I ask.

My brother’s rough around the edges, but he’s generally a mellow guy, so his tone is discerning. “Vegas, Mic.”

“Oh, right, the casino pitch.” I’d assumed Zee rescheduled and never bothered to check. It’s not like me to let work slide like that. “Couldn’t Zee reschedule or go himself?”

“The casino wasn’t flexible, and there was a crisis in one of Zane’s complexes.” Eli sighs in resignation at his fate. “Handling our biggest client was more urgent than a potential client that’s in a new industry we’re not even sure we want to get involved in.”

“Damn. I’ll call in and see what I can do to help.”

“You should have been here to be on top of it,” Eli snaps. “Damn it, Mic, what was so important that you haven’t even checked in for two days?”

“It’s complicated.” I look at the door to my and Milly’s room, wondering when she’ll be back from her field day, thinking of her showering under the same water jet I just used, naked and wet just a few feet away from me, water slicking between her long legs as her fingers follow the trail.

“Is she really that special?” Elijah’s voice snaps me out of my fantasy. “She’s just a kid.”

“I don’t think she is, Eli.”

“Yeah, Joe said as much. He said he should get to Beliani’s tomorrow evening at the latest.” There’s a long silence, and I sense Elijah wants to lay some heavy reality on me, but he’s struggling. He’s the gentle giant type and isn’t good with hard truths.

“Just say it, Eli. Don’t think so hard.” I refrain from adding, you’ll hurt yourself, knowing it’ll just push his buttons, and that’s not what I want to do right now.

“I had a guy check your car, and she was right. It was tampered with.
